Government College of Art & Craft Agartala is one of the leading colleges of Visual Arts in India and one of the best in North East India. The college was established on September 9, 1975, under the aegis of veteran artist Dr. Sumangal Sen, who was the founder principal of the institution. Other famous personalities including Bimal Deb, Bipul kanti Saha, Bimal Kar, Chinmoy Roy have also served the institution since its inception. Two other distinguished luminaries worth mentioning here are Educator Dr. Bipradas Palit and Prof. Rameswar Bhattacharya - who remained associated with the institute at some point or other. Interestingly, the institute started its journey in the balcony of Rabindra Shatavarshiki Bhavan. Over the years the campus has been shifted to different venues quite a number of times, finally getting its own building in 2009.

Situated at the top of a hillock in the beautiful and green city of Agartala, the college is nestled amidst the panorama of teeming greenery at Lichubagan, Airport Road. The campus, sprawls over 6.25 acres, and is adjacent to Albert Ekka Park, Bamboo & Cane Development Institute, Govt. Music College and Pulin Debbarman Memorial Auditorium. Well connected by air, rail and road, the city receives visitors from home and abroad all the year round. And today, Agartala has proudly emerged as a recognised center of education and learning.

The Government College of Art & Craft Agartala is affiliated to Tripura University (A Central University) and is under per view of 12 B and 2F of the UGC Act. Aesthetically speaking, the college building is a delectable sight for visitors and is armed with all modern facilities. The institution thrives on openness of ideas practiced and promoted by a group of committed teachers. The objective of the teaching programme and training in the college is to achieve overall refinement of the students' perception and not to keep them confined to the skills of the profession alone but also to create the right kind of intellect, as well as to encourage emotional cultivation to arrive at a level of composite creativity and thought. In spite of infrastructural constrains, the college has been maintaining high academic excellence. The institution has strictly adhered to the academic calendar and the students have found placements throughout the country where they continue to grow with an artist’s heart and contribute to society and to art.
